Stock option backdating scandal, increased responsibility to enforce Sarbanes-Oxley, and genuine burn out are three reasons to blame for high CFO turnover in 2006. According to Liberum Research, 2,301 CFOs left their positions last year. Retirement and resignation account for 22 percent of the turnover, while filling a position elsewhere is responsible for 36 percent of the change. Less than 1 percent of CFOs were actually fired. Still, the CEO seat remains the most volatile; 2,743 CEOs departed from their jobs in 2006.
