Career & Compensation Alerts

From BusinessFinanceLink, Issue #391

Finance executives have been struggling to devise programs that address employees' lack of financial preparedness for retirement, and a recent estimate of health-care costs for the golden years indicates retirees are facing an even greater burden. Fidelity Investments crunched the numbers and found that a 65-year-old couple retiring in 2007 can expect to pay a whopping $215,000 together for that care over 16 to 18 years -- a figure that includes premiums and cost-sharing provisions related to Medicare Parts B and D. The estimated cost rose 7.5 percent over Fidelity's 2006 projections, and it has grown 34 percent since 2002. The expected health care expenses could gobble up 50 percent of 2007 retirees' pre-tax Social Security benefit, according to Fidelity. It's probably too late for the 2007 retirees, but employers have a number of options available to help younger employees make wise health-care choices and save for retirement.
