Absenteeism Costly for Companies

Large companies are losing an estimated $760,000 per year in direct payroll costs due to absenteeism, according to the 2007 CCH Unscheduled Absence Survey. That figure climbs even higher when companies factor in the lower productivity, lost revenue and poor morale that accompany absences. The top reasons for missing work are personal illness (34 percent), family issues (22 percent), personal needs (18 percent), entitlement mentality (13 percent) and stress (13 percent). Work-life programs such as alternative work arrangements, telecommuting, a compressed work week, leave for school functions and flu shots can help alleviate the problem, but the study found that many companies are eliminating these types of programs to save money.
