Career & Compensation Alerts

November 20, 2007 3:48 PM

Events at work, rather than at home, have had the most significant effect on the careers of executives from around the world, according to a survey by The McKinsey Quarterly. Respondents were asked to identify career-shaping events from a list of family, personal, and workplace experiences -- the top career-altering events occurred when the respondents realized they were passionate about a different role or industry, took a new job, realized their current jobs had become less attractive, or were no longer leading the lives they desired. Eighty-nine percent of executives said the effect of the career-changing event was positive, particularly in the areas of job satisfaction, intellectual interest, and career advancement, but 40 percent of respondents said that the change has made balancing work with private life difficult.
