Career & Compensation Alerts

Do your co-workers a favor and stay home if you’re sick. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 5 to 20 percent of Americans contract the influenza virus annually, and an even larger number of Americans come down with a cold each year. One of the best ways to avoid catching a bug, according to the CDC, is to avoid close contact with sick people, which isn’t easy to do when you have an office mate sneezing next to you. Unfortunately, people rarely spare the office from their germs -- a 2005 survey by the administrative staffing firm OfficeTeam found that 80 percent of people go to work while ill. "The problem with office culture is that people are afraid to go home when they're sick," says Deborah Rice, an office manager in New York City. Rice reports that “just as people are discouraged from taking all the vacation days they have coming, they are also frowned upon for staying out sick.”
