A majority of Australians (58 percent) have eaten kangaroo meat, according to a new study that shows Aussies' appetite for the hopping animals is increasing. Millions of kangaroos are killed in the wild each year to control overpopulation, and currently much of the meat is being turned into pet food. However, the study "Consumer attitudes to kangaroo meat products" suggests that kangaroos could become "the ultimate free-range food." It said, "The most promising products in which kangaroo manufacturing meat could be used (are) mince, deli meats, and pies" and found "there was a clear preference for the Chunky Beef & Roo pie (rather than just kangaroo)." Animal rights activists, including former Beatle Paul McCartney, are protesting what McCartney called "kangaroo slaughter."
