Career & Compensation Alerts

With all the talk of a sluggish economy, it may come as a surprise that companies intend to hire more college graduates than they did last year. According to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, 22 percent of U.S. organizations will recruit more college grads than they did in 2007, and CollegeGrad.com's annual survey claims 60 percent of companies plan to bring more graduates on board than last year. Why are so many jobs available for this demographic? "We're not graduating enough students to replace baby boomers," explains Steve Schroeder, director of the business career center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Many boomers are opting for early retirement when faced with a layoff, and new hires are inexpensive. "Companies need talent now more than anything -- and they're getting good, young talent for a fraction of what they're paying someone older who's been with the company for ten years or more," adds Schroeder.
