Few executives make it to the top rung of the corporate ladder without a healthy ego, but as this article explains, overconfidence can lead managers to cross ethics boundaries and perpetrate fraud by boxing themselves in. "An executive believes his firm is experiencing only a bad quarter or patch of bad luck," says the author. "He also believes it is in the best interest of everyone involved ... to cover up the problem in the short term ... he is convinced that down the road the company will make up for the current period of poor performance." These overconfident executives can find themselves on a slippery slope -- especially in tough economic times.
