Matching BI Tools to Users' Needs
April 16, 2008 3:46 PM
Predictive analytics, dashboards, business query tools, scorecards, spreadsheets, OLAP, interactive reports -- with so many business intelligence (BI) tools available, how does a company choose which to deploy? The truth is that different users and departments will utilize different tools, explains Cindi Howson in "The Most Successful Business Intelligence Tool." Before prioritizing according to departmental budgets or team members who put up the biggest fight, consider how each tool's capacity will improve these four things: user reach and empowerment, stakeholder and user perception, ability to solve a particular problem, and value of the decisions. Howson asked different user types to rank the most successful aspects of BI deployment, and found that 62 percent of survey respondents claim business query and ad hoc reporting are key. "For both power users and information consumers alike, business query tools allow the business to more quickly analyze information and respond to a rapidly changing business environment without having to rely exclusively on expert programmers or the IT department," says Howson.
