The sluggish economy is flattening funds for training and professional development, while HR managers are under increasing pressure to avoid talent shortages and develop prospective leaders. According to the fifth annual Volunteer IMPACT Survey by Deloitte LLP, 91 percent of HR managers believe skills-based volunteering is a cost-effective option, yet only 16 percent integrate such opportunities into employee development. “Skills-based volunteer programs provide valuable experiential learning opportunities for employees that build business and leadership skills without the expense often associated with traditional corporate training programs,” says Evan Hochberg, national director of community involvement at Deloitte Services.
