After much hullabaloo, a judge ordered Grace Saenz-Lopez, the dognapping former mayor of Alice, Texas, to return Puddles, the Shih Tzu she stole from her neighbors. Last year Saenz-Lopez watched Puddles while Rudy Gutierrez and his wife, Shelly Cavasos, were on vacation. While they were away, Saenz-Lopez called them and said that Puddles had died and that she had buried the dog in her garden. A few months later, however, relatives of the Gutierrez-Cavasos family spotted Puddles (now renamed Panchito) at the dog groomer. Saenz-Lopez refused to return the dog so the family filed a lawsuit. Judge Richard Terrell, who presided over the dognapping case, said, "I can't tell you what a spectacle this has been and the multitude of jokes that I've had to hear." He told his courtroom, "a lot of this is just plain, flat ridiculous." Saenz-Lopez and her sister now face criminal charges for illegal abduction of a pet.
