This interview with Peter Cappelli, director of Wharton's Center for Human Resources, offers a new and unusual approach to getting talented employees when you need them -- apply the principles of supply chain management to people. The challenges of getting essential talent are particularly acute in a recessionary economy, according to Cappelli. Part of the problem, he says, is that people are job hopping more these days, so you can't be sure what your internal supply of talent actually is. But he believes techniques that come from supply chain management are designed specifically to deal with such uncertainty and that they can help companies win the war for talent.
