Black Bear Guards Prison

The Louisiana State Penitentiary, which is located in a rural part of the state, has a new type of guard on the grounds -- a black bear weighing more than 400 pounds that likely wandered over from the nearby woods. "I love that bear being right where it is," said Warden Burl Cain. "I tell you what, none of our inmates are going to try to get out after dark and wander around when they might run into a big old bear. It's like having another guard at no cost to the taxpayer." Maria Davidson, manager of the Large Carnivore Program for the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, doesn't think the bears would be very good guards, though. She said, "Bears are actually very shy, their tendency is to run and hide."
